The annual Grammy awards were held this past weekend, and more talk other than music was brought up, as politics were a popular discussion throughout the show. Numerous artists used their fame as a platform to address social issues. Unfortunately, I missed watching the show so as I usually do, I resort to Twitter to catch up. There are so many current social and political issues happening throughout the world, and many voices are being expressed but getting lost in the chaos. Newly elected president, Donald J. Trump, has proposed a “Muslim Ban”, preventing citizens of multiple countries from entering the United States. Despite the list of countries affected, this ban affects mainly Muslim-majority nations, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Iraq. Refugees are also expected to face an impact, as this ban suspends the Syrian refugee program. A rap group named A Tribe Called Quest performed an over the top performance, starting with saying “Tonight, we represent you” and at the end shouting “Resist” while kicking down a wall. This clearly addressed the Muslim Ban. Being a teenager in today’s society, I tend to keep up with news of celebrities. After reading these headlines, I was pleasantly surprised to see a large group of them using their fame to address political issues and to help change the world, rather than showing off a new car they bought.
