In class we have been studying the act of gerrymandering and what it means along with its history. Our professor notified us of a case involving racial gerrymandering in Virginia, as African Americans were separated into three districts to transfer their vote. As crazy as it is that this still happens in the current day, I read another article on Slate.com that yet another case of racial gerrymandering has taken place in Georgia. The House has passed a bill that would remove black voters out of multiple GOP districts, and being traded for white voters. The bill was passed in two days, and I cannot comprehend how this is legal. It clearly violates the Equal Protection Clause, and I cannot imagine how if the bill would pass into a law, how they would explain their reason for swapping districts based upon race. After reading the article and doing my fair share of research, I was completely shocked that this type of thing would happen in the current day.
